A STEM-Minded Entrepreneurial Spirit

Springfield, Massachusetts & New York, New York

Samuel R. Scottron received his first patent for his adjustable mirrors in 1868. He went on to represent his community in the 1865 National Colored Convention and formed with Cuban Anti-Slavery Society with Rev. Henry Highland Garnet in 1872. After graduating with a Superior Ability in Algebra and Engineering degree from Cooper Union in 1875, Scottron went on to invent and market his products. While many of his inventions were not patented, two of the most notable were the curtain rod and a supporting bracket.
