In 2008, while studying at Harvard College, Jessica O. Matthews co-invented the Soccket—a soccer ball that captures kinetic energy during play to generate electricity. Inspired by a childhood experience in Nigeria where frequent power outages necessitated the use of hazardous diesel generators, Matthews sought to create a sustainable energy solution. The Soccket provided a means for children to engage in play while simultaneously generating power for essential needs like lighting, exemplifying Matthews' innovative approach to addressing energy challenges in underserved communities.

Building on the success of the Soccket, Matthews founded Uncharted Power, a company dedicated to developing renewable energy technologies. Under her leadership, the company expanded its focus to include the MORE (Motion-based Off-Grid Renewable Energy) system, integrating energy-harvesting technology into infrastructure such as sidewalks and roadways. In 2016, Matthews raised $7 million in Series A funding, marking one of the largest investments for a Black female founder at the time. Her work not only advanced technological innovation but also challenged industry norms, paving the way for greater diversity in the tech sector.

Today, Matthews continues to influence the renewable energy landscape through her role as CEO of Uncharted Power and as a member of the U.S. Department of Energy's Electricity Advisory Committee.
