What: Juan Garrido was a free Black African who participated in the Spanish conquest of Mexico. After settling in Mexico City, he became a successful farmer and is credited with planting the first wheat crop in the New World. Garrido's introduction of wheat to the Americas had a long-lasting impact on agriculture and food production in the region.
