Who: The National Society of Black Women in Medicine,

What: NSBWM is an organization dedicated to increasing the recruitment and retention of Black women in medicine and related fields, offering support through educational resources, mentorship, and career advancement opportunities.​

Originally founded as Black Women in Medicine Inc., was established at Florida State University on October 14, 2017, by Amber Balkcom and Ashlei Phillips. The organization was created in response to the lack of representation of minority women in medicine and scientific fields. Inspired during a walk, Amber wrote the mission statement while Ashlei designed the logo, marking the start of a movement. The society aims to increase the recruitment and retention of Black women in medicine while supporting those already established in the field, fostering unity, mentorship, and educational opportunities to combat racial inequities. It was established to address the underrepresentation of minority women in medicine and scientific disciplines, aiming to combat educational and professional racial inequities by fostering unity, providing resources, and promoting mentorship.
