Fire Safety and the Underground Railroad

Chambersburg, PA

After moving to Chambersburg from Virginia, Joseph Winters notices the laborious and timely task of getting ladders off the wagons and over to burning buildings during fire rescues. Winter invented the fire escape ladder for cities growing up instead of out. Also, during his time in Chambersburg, he was active in the Underground Railroad, with his mixed race of Black and Shawnee folx nicknamed him "Indian Dick."
