Elkins Eases Daily Life

Dr. Thomas Elkins was a pharmacist, inventor, and abolitionist. Dr. Elkins patented a combined dining, ironing table and quilting frame which resembles a folding table and a refrigerated apparatus which resembles a large freezer. He also patented an improved "chamber-commode" which combined multiple pieces of furniture into one. Dr. Elkin served as secretary of the Vigilance Committee which provided legal assistance, food, clothing, money, employment, and shelter for enslaved people escaping to freedom.
