Fire Safety and the Underground Railroad

Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

After moving to Chambersburg from Virginia, Winters notices the laborious and timely task of getting ladders off the wagons and over to burning buildings during fire rescues. From there he invented the fire escape ladder for when cities were growing up instead of out. Also, during his time in Chambersburg he was active in the Underground Railroad, with his mixed race of Black and Shawnee folx nicknamed him "Indian Dick.
