Alexander P. Ashbourne noted the process for biscuit-cutting at the 1863 Emancipation Celebration in Philadelphia and spent a decade developing a spring-loaded biscuit cutter for uniform size and shape. He also invented a refining process for coconut oil from which he manufactured and sold goods made from coconuts.​
